Are you afraid of those big websites that are competition ? How do you deal with the threat ?
When I say threat, they will intentionally try to kill you. Sometimes using methods that are morally corrupt.
There is one thing that big websites cannot do, personal care. Talk to every member, understand what they need and adjust accordingly.
As for things out of the scope of running a website, for each their own method.

I see how Microsoft is handling Github. They are making it hard for Gitlab through freebies and the much pitched sponsorship program for open source project maintainers.
I am not afraid of it, but i am thinking of whether i can achieve the same height achieved by the big websites.
Few big sites won't mind competition but some are there to pull a budding website. (DDos or spam post)
