Being a programmer is a risky job

Do you think that being a programmer is a bit risky compared to other fields. Mainly because new technologies come and rule. If you do not update yourself frequently, you are lost.

Abhi no, I don't think so. New technologies do come and go, yes, but if you're a full stack developer, then you can easily reinvent yourself as it's mostly the front end that changes regularly, but not so much the backend such as PHP and mysql for example.

No threat when new guys come in with all sort of badges on their chest which represent the new frameworks like Laravel and so on ?

Not really. Laravel is the top of the stack - you still need the underlying components.

In my place, there are a lot of senior IT guys who lost their job. There is no reason at all. Perhaps not even enough notice period. Most of them got a maximum of one month notice. Simply because companies can get the work done by junior level candidates at a much lesser salary.

Or in the case of the UK, outsource to offshore consultancy firms as the overhead is much cheaper - think...

No pension, No monthly salary (just a flat fee), no benefits (bonus, healthcare) etc...

I always try to stay competent. If a company does not like me, I will be the one to say goodbye. Make sure they need you, work hard like no one else.
