Only thing to make sure is that you do not put banner on bad website. ie, badly rated by Google for its content or other elements / components.
I see general forums use this techniques to do a simple banner exchange. I love the idea and it is a good way to earn visitors and traffic.
If people help each other, it will be more effective than signature links.
