Video Hosting, what is needed?

I thought of hosting some videos, but i read it is not easy to run a website unless you have lot of cash and time. I saw few free scripts as of now, it is decent but if i pay a hefty price i can get the premium script. But what about hosting, what is needed actually?

You will need a powerful server. One that can handle transcoding ( if required ).

That's not true. You can upload the video to your servers, then make use of a CDN to distribute it. One that is very reasonably priced is BunnyCDN

It will be costly mainly because your server needs to be powerful to stream video files. I have tried that at home using Plex. The video quality was bad when I streamed through the network. I blame my moderately powerful PC than the network. If my assumption is correct, the same will happen if you are to host videos on your hosting.

I am not saying you cannot host videos. You can do that even on a shared hosting. I am more worried about the clarity of the video.

Now i understand why there is no tough competition for YouTube.

There are many competitors. But they do not have the luxury of getting pre-installed in crores of Android devices like YouTube. Vimeo, Dailymotion etc are still popular.

But when it comes to common people like us, the investment required is a bit challenging.

Are you planning to invest a lot, if not it is a bad idea to host not so small videos.

As discussed earlier in this topic, it comes to the server costs and bandwidth. They are not cheap at the moment.

I am not ready to invest a lot at the moment, but i thought starting with a small way and as it grows i thought of adding more.

There is another case too. If you have very less traffic / views, this might not affect you.

Is there any reason you would want to host them yourselves ?

I see Youtube added ads in most of their videos and it looks like spam spot so thought of hosting videos of religious content with no ads

That sounds like a good idea. I hope you understand that a decent video is around 100 MB these days. 10 views will cost you 1 GB of bandwidth.

As for mp3, I don't think there will be a lot of load on your server. I recently read about lbry . It comes without any ads.

It is a service like YouTube. But it works entirely different from YouTube ( they say so ). When I tried, I saw some YouTube like layout and videos. It was just like YouTube with a different colour scheme.

I think it will use peer to peer technology or something to become decentralised. You need to check on that area.

This one might actually pick up. But I don't know what kind of videos they are doing to allow. Some of them are a big no for many users.

That is there. There are certain websites your workplace admin blocks. You do not want your commercial video on it.
