These days there are rank badges, points, money etc replacing the old reputation / karma system. If you go to websites like Stack Exchange or AskUbuntu, those very brilliant people will still beg you for an up vote or ask you approve the answer.
Let us not talk about it. Those guys are real genius. Their knowledge is unparalleled. But still they fall for the like hunting thing. But if that is a reward for the great work they are doing. I am fine with it.
Some of them go rogue and down vote other answers to get selected as the best answer.

There is always the other side of the coin. There is nothing we can do about it.
I am happy that we can flag such activities. Moderators can curb such practices to a great extent.
Their mods are good. I have seen them operate first hand.

Even Stack Overflow themselves are well aware of these issues, yet choose to do nothing about them.
I used to actively contribute on Stack Overflow, but no longer. I actually deleted my account, plus all the posts and knowledge I combined over the years. It's another reason why I created Phenomlab.com - to remove the stigma and treat everyone from all walks of life and technical abilities as equals.
